Springs are the most important moving parts in a garage door. They are also the parts most likely to fail. Every time the door goes up or down, the springs wind and unwind under heavy load. Steel wire that flexes thousands of times will eventually fatigue and break. It is not a question of whether a spring will fail. It is a question of when.

How garage door springs work
A garage door can weigh from around one hundred pounds to several hundred pounds, depending on size and materials. No person and no small motor should be lifting that weight on every cycle. Springs do that work.
Torsion springs
Most modern residential doors use torsion springs. These are tightly wound steel coils on a metal shaft above the door opening. When the door closes, cables pull on drums at the ends of the shaft and wind the springs tighter. That stores energy. When the door opens, the springs unwind and release the energy, and they lift most of the door's weight. The opener then only has to guide the door and finish the travel.
Torsion systems have one spring on a single-car door or two on a wide or heavy door. The two springs share the load. If one breaks, the other is carrying more than it was designed for and is usually close behind.
Extension springs
Extension springs run parallel to the horizontal track on each side of the door. They stretch as the door closes and contract as it opens. They are common on older or lighter doors. They are usually paired with safety cables that run through the center of each spring. If an extension spring breaks without a safety cable, the pieces can whip through the garage.
Why balance matters
When springs are matched correctly, the door is balanced. It stays in place when raised halfway. The opener does little work. When springs are too weak, the door feels heavy and the opener strains. When they are too strong, the door can shoot up or refuse to stay closed. Correct balance is the real goal of any spring repair.

Safety first: what not to do
Many injuries happen when people try to lift the door to get a car out. A door that has lost its springs will feel heavy but may still move. When it slips, it drops with the full force of its weight. Do not try this alone.
If you must get a car out, call us first and describe the situation. Some doors can be raised safely by two adults using the manual release and by propping in the fully open position with clamps, but only if the technician agrees. We would rather explain the risk than have you take it.
Do not run the opener after a spring breaks. The opener is not built to lift the door alone. Repeated attempts can strip the gears or burn out the motor. That turns a spring repair into a spring and opener repair.

Springs do not break at random. A few clear causes account for most failures.
Cycle fatigue
Each spring is built for a number of open-and-close cycles. Standard residential springs are commonly rated around 10,000 cycles. Higher-cycle springs are available with longer ratings. A household that uses the door four times a day reaches 10,000 cycles in about seven years. A household that uses it eight times a day reaches it in about three and a half. This is why a door that seems fairly new can need springs sooner than expected.
Rust and corrosion

How we repair and replace garage door springs
A spring repair is a controlled, step-by-step job. Here is what happens.
- Inspection. We look at the door, the broken spring, the cables, the drums, the rollers, the tracks and the opener.
- Measurement. We measure the door's height and weight. We measure the spring's wire diameter, inside diameter and length, and note whether it is left- or right-wound.

- Safe unloading. We secure the door so it cannot fall and relieve the remaining tension with proper winding bars.
- Replacement. We remove the broken spring and fit the new one on the shaft, along with any needed hardware.
- Winding. We wind the new spring the right number of turns for the door height. This sets the lifting force.
- Balance test. We disconnect the opener and lift the door halfway. It should stay in place. If it drifts, we adjust the tension.
- Full-system check. We inspect cables, drums, rollers and tracks for damage caused by the spring failure.
- Opener and safety test. We reconnect the opener, check limits and force, and test the auto-reverse and sensors.

Should you replace both torsion springs?
If your door has two torsion springs and one breaks, replacing both is the standard advice. The reasoning is simple. Springs installed together at the same time wear at almost the same rate. If one has failed, the other is near the end of its life and has been carrying extra load. Replacing only the broken one saves a little money today and often leads to a second call soon after.
The two springs also need to be matched so the door lifts evenly. A new spring beside an old one can leave the door slightly out of balance. Replacing both gives the most even performance.
Published cost guides reflect this. A 2026 HomeGuide article gives $150 to $350 for replacing both top-mounted torsion springs and $120 to $200 for a pair of side-mounted extension springs. Springs are rated by cycle life. The rating tells you roughly how many open-and-close cycles the spring can perform before it is likely to fail.

Torsion or extension: should you convert?
Some older Santa Monica homes have extension springs on lighter doors. Torsion systems are generally considered safer because the spring is contained on a shaft and the load is smoother. They can also make the door run more evenly. Converting an extension system to torsion requires new hardware, including a shaft, drums, bearing plates and cables. It costs more than a like-for-like replacement.
Conversion is worth considering if the extension springs have failed and the door is otherwise in good shape. It is also worth considering if the door has no safety cables. We give you both options and quote them in writing.
Spring problems that look like something else
A door that will not lift is not always a spring problem. A few other faults can look similar.

- A blocked or bent track. The door binds partway. This is a track issue.
- A sensor fault. The door goes up but will not close. The springs are not the cause.

What a spring repair means for the rest of the door
A snapped spring often causes secondary damage. The sudden release can shift the shaft, loosen the drums or shake the door hard enough to jump a roller. That is why the inspection after a spring failure matters.
We check the cable ends and drum grooves for damage. We check the shaft for straightness. We check the center bearing and end bearing plates for wear. We check that the top brackets are secure. If something else has been hurt, we tell you and quote it separately.

Springs are not one size fits all. When a technician measures a torsion spring, four numbers matter. Together they decide how much lifting force the spring gives.
- Wire diameter. The thickness of the steel wire. Even a small change in thickness changes the strength a lot. Technicians measure a run of coils and divide to get an exact size.
- Inside diameter. The width of the opening in the middle of the coil. Common sizes are quite standard, but they must match the shaft and the winding cone.
- Length. The unstretched length of the spring. Longer springs turn more and give a smoother lift.
- Wind direction. Springs are wound left or right. The pair on a two-spring door are opposite, and they must be installed on the correct side.
The door's weight and height decide which combination works. A technician can weigh the door with a scale on the bottom edge. That is more reliable than guessing from a chart. It also explains why a spring from a hardware store often fails to balance a door. It matched a generic door, not yours.
